The appointment of Leland Wong to the California High-Speed Rail Authority Board provides the effort with a breadth of experience on major infrastructure and land use policy projects. Currently, Wong is the director of government and community relations for the California division of Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program. He is an appointee of State Assembly Speaker Robert M. Hertzberg.
As a public affairs director for Kaiser Permanente since 1987, Wong manages the corporate contributions program, serves as chief liaison to the government sector and is responsible for managing strategic response to public policy. Prior to joining the organization, he served as chief administrative officer for Los Angeles city councilman Robert Farrell and was executive director of California Tomorrow, a statewide public policy organization, and the former director of public policy for the United Way Inc. of Los Angeles.
Having served under two Los Angeles mayoral administrations, Wong is a former vice president of the L.A. City Police and Fire Pensions Commission and is the past president of both the Airport Commission and the L.A. Board of Harbor Commissioners.
A founding board member of the Chinatown Economic Development Council, Wong also serves on the board of directors for the Asian Pacific Corporate Alliance, the L.A. Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the L.A. Sheriff's Youth Foundation, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Association, the Sickle Cell Research Disease Foundation, and the Trust for Public Land.
